It's a microbial world
Staphylcoccus aureus causes many skin infections and can lead to more serious/deadly conditions like toxic shock syndrome.  One distinguishing characteristic is it’s ability to break down red blood cells completely (beta-hemolysis), a process that can be seen by the clearing around colonies grown on blood agar plates (above).  Antibiotic resistance is a major issue with the species - you may have heard of the methicillin resistant type called MRSA.  This drug resistant strain is not uncommon in hospitals and other places where people share equipment that their skin comes into contact with,  like weight rooms and fitness centers
